Wheels of Time PC&F 50-ft Exterior Post Insulated Boxcars

PC&F 50-ft Exterior Post Insulated Boxcar

PC&F 50-ft Exterior Post Insulated Boxcar

Wheels of Time has announced eight Frisco road numbers of their PC&F 50-ft Exterior Post Insulated Boxcars.

Here’s Wheels of Time’s promotional language: Wheels of Time is proud to announce our all new Pacific Car & Foundry 70-ton, 50-foot Exterior Post Insulated Boxcars with two different door designs. They feature highly detailed car body and undercarriage, body-mounted knuckle couplers, proper ride height, metal wheels for smooth rolling, multiple authentic car numbers, and Youngstown or Landis Plug door according to the actual boxcar. In likeness of the real thing, Wheels of Time models will also have Keystone cushioning details for boxcars so equipped.

These PC&F 70-ton 50-foot Exterior Post Insulated Boxcars, built in Renton Washington, were prevalent from the late 1960’s through the 1980’s. Their exterior post design became the way boxcars are fabricated, largely replacing the double sheathed (smooth side) car body construction. These insulated cars measured 50-feet 6-inches (or 7-inches in some cases) in interior length and had a cargo capacity of roughly 4400 to 5033 cubic feet. They were equipped to hold shifting loads with built in restraining devices, such as from Car Pac or DF Evans. Further, their 20-inch cushioning devices on the cars absorbed the longitudinal forces resulting from slack action that can damage the cargo. They carried food products such as can goods, drinks, packaged food products, dog food, and even chocolate – which needed protection from the changes in temperature, but required no refrigeration.

The Saint Louis-San Francisco Railway XLI boxcars were built by PC&F in December 1971 and numbered 600000-600264. They were equipped with 10-feet 6-inch wide Youngstown Plug Door, rode on ASF 70-ton Ride Control trucks and had 20 inch end of cushioning devices. As of 2006, some of these cars still roam the system in their original paint but under BNSF ownership. Others were repainted and renumbered into BN numbering system and eventually into BNSF roster. These insulated boxcars were classified as XLI – a similar classification as RBI but perhaps with a less restrictive cargo requirement.

The build date of the prototypes was 12-71.

The item/model numbers are; 61127/600000, 61128/600021, 61129/600118, 61130/600124, 61131/600197, 61132/600225, 61133/600243 and 61134/600260.

The MSRP is $26.59 and pre-orders must be in by August 9, 2017. The models are expected in the fall or winter of the year.

Bluford Shops 2-Bay Offset Side Hoppers

Bluford Shops 2-Bay Offset Side Hopper

Bluford Shops 2-Bay Offset Side Hopper

Welcome six more Frisco cars to the fleet courtesy of Bluford Shops!

Bluford Shops new 2-bay offset side hopper features a die cast slope sheet-hopper bay-center sill assembly; injection molded plastic sides, ends and hopper doors; fully molded brake tank, valve and air lines; body mounted brake hose detail; load; body mounted magnetically operating knuckle couplers; and Fox Valley Models metal wheel. MSRP is $24.95 per car.

A 2-bay hopper design with offset sides was first proposed in the 1920s and first appeared in the form seen here in 1934. The AAR adopted it as a standard design the following year. The offset design permitted greater interior capacity than a rib side car with the same outside dimensions. It was thought this more than made up for the car’s higher cost of construction. The last new 2-bay offset side hoppers were built in 1960.

Frisco took delivery of this group of hoppers from Mt. Vernon Car in 1948. SLSF generated a surprising amount of coal from regions in eastern Kansas, Oklahoma, and western Arkansas as well as an important deposit in northern Alabama. Much of this coal was interchanged to connecting lines for delivery to steel mills.

The Frisco cars are as follows:

Item 66151 – Frisco black single $24.95
Item 66152 – Frisco black 2-pack $49.90
Item 66153 – Frisco black 3-pack $74.85

Pre-Orders are open through June 26, 2017 and delivery expected in early 2018.

Intermountain Kanotex Tank Cars

Intermountain Kanotex Tank Car

Intermountain Kanotex Tank Car

Frisco modelers are frequently on the lookout for rolling stock that is road-appropriate. The Kanotex Refining Company was based in Caney, Kansas. The Frisco ran through the townships of Cherry and West Cherry in Northeast Montgomery County Kansas, and Caney is located in the Southwest part of Montgomery County, but these cars would have been good candidates to travel the tracks of the SL-SF, AT&SF, MP, and MKT Railroads.

Micro-Trains released a Kanotex tank car in 2013, and now, Intermountain Railway Company is releasing six road numbers of their ACF Type 27 Riveted 8,000 Gallon Tank Cars.

According to Intermountain, these cars feature sharp painting and lettering, finely molded details, and Intermountain metal wheelsets. The item/road numbers are 66346-01/8309, 66346-02/8311, 66346-03/8314, 66346-04/8318, 66346-05/8320, and 66346-06/8326.

The models were announced on March 17 and reservations are due by April 30. Delivery is expected in October or November. The MSRP is $26.95.

Intermountain SD38-2s

Intermountain SD38-2

Intermountain SD38-2

Intermountain Railway Company has announced four road numbers of their new SD38-2 in Frisco livery, which will account for the entire Frisco fleet of the locomotive.

The item/road numbers are 693307-01/296, 693307-02/297, 693307-03/298, 693307-04/299.

The SD38-2s were manufactured from 1972 to 1979. Intermountain states that the SD38-2 was typically used in yard service where low speeds and good tractive effort was required. Almost all are still in service today with many being refitted as remote control yard locomotives.

The models were announced on March 17 and reservations are due by April 30. Delivery is expected in the Spring of 2018.

The price of the DC locomotive is #139.95, the DCC locomotive is $189.95, and the DCC model with sound is $249.95.

Micro-Trains 89’ Bi-Level Open Autorack

Micro-Trains 89’ Bi-Level Open Autorack

Micro-Trains has given us another autorack.

Micro-Trains promotional language states; “This 89’ bi-level open autorack is yellow with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. As one of the very first railroads to own multi-level auto flatcars, Frisco painted nearly all of their autoracks “Frisco” yellow with the black “coonskin” logo which served in this paint well into the 1980s. This bi-level rack was made with the option of being converted to a tri-level.”

The item/road numbers are 112 00 540/930924 and the MSRP is $29.95. These can be ordered directly from Micro-Trains.

Atlas USRA Double Sheathed QA&P Boxcar

Atlas USRA Double Sheathed QA&P Box Car

Atlas USRA Double Sheathed QA&P Boxcar

We have waited a long time for a commercial manufacturer to release a N Scale model bearing the Quanah, Acme & Pacific road name. To our knowledge, there has never been a model released in this Frisco subsidiary road name.

The battle has been won by the Atlas Model Railroad Company.

Atlas’ promotional language: The original USRA (United States Railway Administration) design boxcars date from World War I when car designs began to be standardized. The double sheathed version was the first widely accepted 40-foot steel underframe boxcars placed in service. Some 24,500 cars were delivered to 24 different railroads throughout the country.

Features:

  • 5-5-5 or 7-8 steel ends
  • Fishbelly or standard center sill
  • Vertical or end mounted brakes
  • Steel or wood doors

Item/road numbers: 50 003 191/531, and 50 003 192/535.

Bluford Shops 30′ 6″ 2-Bay Panel Side Hoppers

Bluford Shops 30' 6" 2-Bay Panel Side Hopper

Bluford Shops 30′ 6″ 2-Bay Panel Side Hopper

Bluford Shops is proud to announce their second group of 30’ 6” 2-Bay panel side hoppers in N scale. These cars first appeared in the 1930’s as some early 2-bay hoppers came due for heavy maintenance. A predecessor of Standard Railway Equipment introduced replacement side panels that were bulged outward between the ribs for the purpose of increasing the interior capacity of the cars. A number of railroads adopted these panels, or those from competing suppliers, for a portion of their 30’ 6” 2-Bay hopper fleets.

These ready-to-run N scale models feature: die cast slope sheet-hopper bay-center sill assembly, injection molded plastic sides, ends, and hopper doors, fully molded brake tank, valve and air lines, body mounted brake hose detail, coal load; lever-style hand brake, body mounted magnetically operating knuckle couplers, close coupling, and Fox Valley Models metal wheels.

Frisco began rebuilding their 3,500 car USRA 2-bay hopper fleet with panel sides in 1943. At first glance, one might think Frisco wouldn’t be much of a coal hauler. But in fact they served big coal producing regions in eastern Kansas and Oklahoma, western Arkansas, as well as an important deposit in northern Alabama. Much of this coal was interchanged to connecting lines for delivery to steel mills.

This run will be available in six road numbers.

Item number 62111 (single car): $23.95
Item number 62112 (2-Pack): $47.90
Item number 62113 (3-Pack): $71.85

Pre-orders are due September 30, 2016. Delivery is expected early in the second quarter of 2017.

Athearn F89F Bi-Level Autorack

Athearn F89F Bi-Level Auto Rack

Athearn F89F Bi-Level Auto Rack

Good news two times in September from Athearn! Three road numbers have been announced of their F89F Bi-Level Auto Rack.

The item/road numbers are ATH14383/910420, ATH14384/910421, and ATH14385/910424.

Athearn includes the following promotional language: Introduced in the early 1960s, the Trailer Train (now TTX Company) F89F flatcar has been a mainstay of contemporary railroading. A product of Bethlehem Steel Company’s (BSC) Johnstown, PA plant, over 9,000 of these (89’ 8” over the strikers) cars were built throughout the 1960s. Visually distinctive from other long flatcars of their era thanks to their “C” channel side sills, these versatile cars were adapted
for many types of service and loadings over the years, ranging from Trailer-On-Flatcar (TOFC), to autoracks, to structural steel loading. While the majority went to Trailer Train, many were built for various railroads, typically for autorack service. Many were “de-racked” in later years, being reassigned and equipped for other service – TOFC, vehicle loading, pipe service, etc.

This Athearn N-scale model was designed from the start to incorporate as many prototype details and variations as possible, based upon field measurements and builder diagrams, in order to appeal to modelers of multiple eras. You can rest assured of its smooth performance, thanks to a heavy die-cast frame for reliable tracking, and our N-scale 70-ton ASF Ride-Control trucks.

Operationally, these cars are appropriate for any layout set from the 1960s to the present day. The Auto Racks would be fastened to the 89’ flatcar for auto service from Detroit. The Athearn N-scale Auto Rack features a Bethlehem Steel F89FH with a Whitehead and Kales bi-level rack. High level of detail ensures authenticity to the prototype.

The following features are also listed:

• Die-cast underframe
• Weighted for trouble free operation
• Authentic undulating safety railing
• Accurate Whitehead and Kales Auto Rack
• End bridge plates per prototype and era
• Use for dedicated intermodal trains or mixed freight
• Detailed deck
• Decorated models fully-assembled and ready to run out of the box
• Highly-detailed, injection-molded body
• Separately applied hand brake per prototype

• Body mounted McHenry operating knuckle couplers
• Clear blister packaging for easy viewing
• Minimum radius: 10”
• Recommended radius: 12”+

Diamond Products Tank Car

Micro-Trains continues to add to its tank car series with products that are of interest to the Frisco modeler. The May 2014 releases include another car to add to the fleet.

An online article chronicles the history of the Mid-Continent Petrolium Corporation, and most people familiar with Friscoland will remember DX Gasoline Stations. This car will help (what may have been) a small tank car fleet grow for most Frisco N Scalers.

Broadway Limited Paragon2 E8s

Broadway Limited - Paragon2 E8

Broadway Limited – Paragon2 E8

Broadway Limited has finally posted information on their website about their Paragon2 E8 releases. We’ve known about this impending announcement for some time, and it’s not without a bit of frustration.

In the 1990s Life-Like issued four different roadnumbers of Frisco E8s. These were 2016 (Citation), 2019 (Cavalcade), 2020 (Big Red), and 2022 (Middleground).

Broadway Limited’s E8s are announced as being 2016 (Citation), Item #3255, and 2200 (Cavalcade), Item #3256. It’s important to note that 2016 is a duplicate of one of the Life-Like units, and also that Frisco had no such unit numbered 2200. If the unit is to be Cavalcade, the roadnumber would be 2019, which would mean another duplicate of a previously issued unit.

Frisco’s fleet of E-Units were numbered from 2000-2022, and were referred to as “Racehorses” as each was not only numbered, but was also named after a famous horse.

These locomotives carry a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $229.99. At such a price most modelers would expect roadnumbers that have not been previously issued. Without a doubt these models are made at a quality that is much better than the 1990s Life-Like releases, but to entice modelers to spend the money, at the least the roadnumbers should be different, and the unit purportedly numbered 2200 would simply be an unforgivable error.

Having started the announcement with criticism, here is Broadway Limited’s promotional language:

Most of the premier passenger trains including the AT&SF “Super Chief,” various CB&Q “Zephyrs,” Great Northern’s “Empire Builder,” New York Central’s “Twentieth Century” and Pennsylvania Railroad’s “Broadway Limited” were pulled by EMD “E” unit diesel locomotives from the 1940’s to the 1970’s. The E3’s were introduced in 1939 and became the first “standard” road diesel locomotive that could be ordered off-the-shelf. The E6’s were essentially the same locomotives as the E3’s and differed little in appearance. Broadway Limited is releasing a variety of the shovel-nosed E6’s used to pull so many popular passenger trains. Each model will be equipped with our new Paragon2 DC/DCC Sound & Control system.

These models are forecast for delivery in October 2014.

Micro-Trains Skelly Oil Tank Car

Skelly Oil Tank Car

Skelly Oil Tank Car

Micro-Trains Tank Car Series continues in March with the release of a Skelly Oil car.

The Skelly Oil Company was headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Skelly service stations were located in numerous towns served by the Frisco. Skelly went defunct in 1974 when it was absorbed by the Getty Oil Company.

Frisco modelers would most likely find this car suitable for travel on their lines.

Micro-Trains promotional language states: This 39’ single dome tank car is #6 in our Tank Car Series. It was built in June 1927 at the ACF Milton, PA, plant as part of series 2281 – 2315. It is painted aluminum with black belly and red band. Skelly Oil Company was a medium-sized oil company founded in 1919 by William Grove (Bill) Skelly, Chesley Coleman Herndon and Frederick A. Pielsticker in Tulsa, OK. Skelly Oil became part of Getty Oil Company, Mission Oil Company, and Tidewater Oil Company.

The road number is SKYX2293 and the MSRP is $26.95. The car is expected to be available immediately.

2014 N Scale Wishlist

2013 was not a disappointing year for us Frisco N Scalers. The manufacturers know we are out here and they hear our call with enough frequency to keep us abuzz. Having said that, here are a few things that we feel would be exciting in 2014:

1) Atlas Model Railroad Company:

Atlas was kind to us in April 2010 when they gave us two GP-7 locomotives (Road Numbers 500 and 502).

The Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railway was owned by the Frisco and to our knowledge, nothing QA&P has ever been produced in N Scale. We ask Atlas to consider the image below during their next round of roadname choices:

Quanah, Acme & Pacific GP7

Quanah, Acme & Pacific GP7

Three road numbers would be possible; 546, 547, and 564. Most of us would buy all three!

As they say on TV, “But wait, there’s more!” We have a second request for Atlas:

This thread on TrainBoard.com contains a discussion about the impending release of the Alco S-2 by Atlas.

When the Frisco took over the Northeast Oklahoma Railroad, they inherited three S-2s numbered 295, 296 and 297 (and one S-4 numbered 298).

S-2 296

S-2 296

The Frisco Archive has several high quality scanned slides of the S-2 fleet. (Most have not been published as of this writing but they are available.)

We hope to see these unique Northeast Oklahoma Railroad S-2 locomotives (lettered SL-SF) among the list of roadnames released by Atlas in the S-2!

2) Bluford Shops:

Bluford Shops hit a home run with their transfer caboose runs in multiple roadnames. But, no Frisco.

Transfer Caboose 1322

Here’s another shot on the Frisco Archive.

This is an announcement that we would love to see in 2014 Steve and Craig!

3) Micro-Trains:

Micro-Trains has been good to us Frisco Folks with consistency as chronicled by numerous posts here on nFrisco. They announce their new products at the first of each month and we can usually count on a new Frisco release every few months (and these are good releases too)!

What we are missing is a Frisco Runner-Pack.

Micro-Trains did give us multiple road numbers in a three-pack of hoppers (circa 1997) and in the tank cars that we asked them for in 2010.

So, what do we want to see a runner pack of? Tank cars of course!

Micro-Trains Frisco Tank Cars

Micro-Trains Frisco Tank Cars

These two are lonely and would like four friends to travel the rails with.

So there you have it; three good ideas for 2014.

You might notice that we didn’t mention Athearn and Intermountain, both major manufacturers. Both Athern and Intermountain have multiple Frisco releases pending so we’ll let them concentrate on the delivery of these items. However, any N Scale manufacturer that releases items in the Frisco roadname will receive accolades from us!

As well, the new Frisco Archive contains images of a quality not seen before on the Internet that can aid manufacturers in producing products. Plus, new images are introduced every day.

Happy Frisco modeling in 2014 to all our viewers!

Athearn 40’ 3-Bay Ribbed Hopper

Athearn 40’ 3-Bay Ribbed Hopper

Athearn 40’ 3-Bay Ribbed Hopper

Big news from Athearn this week as their only N Scale offering from this set of new product announcements contains nine Frisco road numbers in the 40′ 3-bay ribbed hopper.

Item/road numbers are as follows: ATH24478 (single car) 88470, ATH24479 (four pack) 88428, 88491, 88536, and 88575, and ATH24480 (four pack) 88443, 88477, 88502, and 88564.

Athearn lists the following feartures:

  • Nine road numbers
  • Removable coal load
  • Painted die-cast under frame
  • Flat ends (unless noted)
  • Roller bearing or Bettendorf trucks
  • Scale profile brake wheel
  • Fully-assembled and ready-to-run
  • Accurately painted and printed
  • Highly detailed, injection molded body
  • Machined metal wheels
  • Screw mounted trucks
  • McHenry knuckle couplers
  • Weighted for trouble free operation
  • Clear plastic jewel box for convenient storage
  • Operates on Code 55 and 80 rail
  • Minimum radius: 9¾”
  • “Built by Frisco” logo

The MSRP for the single car is $19.98 and for the four packs is $74.98. Orders are due by January 24, 2013 and delivery is expected around August 2014.

Note that (unfortunately) road number 88470 is the same road number as a similar Micro-Trains offering a few years ago. The eight road numbers from the four-packs do not appear to duplicate offerings from any other manufacturer(s).

Nine road numbers are believed to be the largest single group of Frisco cars ever offered at one time and we hope that this is a sign of things to come.

Atlas 40′ PS-1 Boxcars

Atlas Frisco 40' PS-1 Boxcar With 8' Youngstown Door

Atlas Frisco 40′ PS-1 Boxcar With 8′ Youngstown Door

December fun continues with an announcement from the Atlas Model Railroad Company of two Frisco road numbers of their 40′ PS-1 Boxcar.

Atlas’ promotional language states, “The 40′ Boxcar is widely known as one of the most popular freight cars used by railroads as they transitioned from steam to diesel. In particular the Pullman Standard, or PS-1, design was one of the most popular and was widely used by North American railroads. These boxcars were built beginning in 1947 and share the same basic design, with certain elements such as door size, door style or roof type varying among the different railroads and production years. When production of these cars ceased in 1963, over 100,000 had been produced.”

Atlas also lists the following features:

  • Body Mounted Accumate Couplers.
  • Barber S-2A 50-ton Trucks with Metal Wheels – Separately Applied Ladders.
  • Etched Metal Roof Walk.
  • 12 Stiffener Roof.
  • Ajax and Miner Brake Wheels.
  • This run features 8’, 6 panel Superior, 8’ Pullman and 8’ Youngstown Doors.
  • Undecorated items will come with all three doors: 8’, 6 panel Superior, 8’ Pullman and 8’ Youngstown Doors and both brake wheels: Ajax and Miner.

Item and road numbers are; 50001625/76004 and 50001626/76183. The artwork shows the road number as 17826. That number is listed as being the road number for one of the Grant Truck Western boxcars that is part of the same run. If clarifying information is received on road numbers, this post will be updated.

The MSRP is $26.95, and Atlas expects to be able to deliver these during the third quarter of 2014.

Intermountain Frisco Heritage Hopper

Intermountain Frisco Heritage Hopper

This release is not for the purists among us but die-hard Frisco fans will not be able to pass on these Intermountain hoppers.

Three hoppers were decorated with the herald of each of the roads. The reporting marks are BNSF.

It was built in May 1949, serviced in July 1963, and runs with a coal load on Roller Bearing trucks. The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, also known as the Frisco, was a railroad that operated in the Midwest and South Central U.S. from 1876 to April 17, 1980. Atlas N 42' Pulpwood Flat Car

Atlas N 42′ Pulpwood Flat Car

Nine years after the Atlas Model Railroad Company gave us our first three pulpwood flatcars (complete with load), Atlas has announced that two more road numbers will be available in the second quarter of 2014.

The original road numbers were 4304, 4310 and 4326. Now, numbers 4301 (Item Number 50 001 433) and 4320 (Item Number 50 001 434) will join the fleet.

Atlas SL-SF Pulpwood Artwork

Atlas SL-SF Pulpwood Artwork

Atlas promotional language states: Pulpwood is not a specific type of wood, but actually tree limbs that are cut to a specified length, then turned into wood pulp and used in the paper industry. Early paper making had the trees near the paper plant. As timber resources were diminished, the need for transporting pulpwood began to rise. Railroads were seen as an efficient method of transporting pulpwood. Pulpwood in the Southeast and Northeast is generally cut into four-foot or less lengths and loaded onto “V-deck” bulkhead flat cars. The Atlas pulpwood flat is a reproduction of an early 1950s General Steel Castings “V-deck” design.

Atlas lists the following features specific to these models;

  • Ready-to-run
  • Rugged die-cast chassis
  • Stirrups
  • Plastic deck plus bulkheads
  • Separate air reservoir
  • Brake cylinder
  • Triple valve
  • Open or closed bulkheads to match the prototype
  • Simulated detailed pulpwood load

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for each model is $19.95.

Bluford Shops TRRA Transfer Caboose

Bluford Shops TRRA Transfer Caboose

Bluford Shops TRRA Transfer Caboose

Although we’ve been begging Bluford Shops to release their popular and acclaimed transfer cabooses in Frisco livery (which we hope will be coming in an announcement soon), we are pleased to report that many Frisco modelers will be excited about the chance to acquire two of these cabooses bearing Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis markings.

Here’s Bluford Shops promotional language: TRRA picked up two of these cabooses second hand from Union Pacific and continues to use them today. When placed into service, each was named (over the window.) 634 was named “Gil” and 635 was named “Duncan.” TRRA locomotives have been produced in HO and N by Bowser and Atlas respectively.

Noteworthy also is that for the first time these items will be simultaneously released in both N and HO scales.

Of the N Scale models, Bluford Shops states that the models will be ready-to-run with operating knuckle style couplers, wire grab irons, etched metal railings, and appropriate trucks for the road name. the N Scale caboose will have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $36.95, and the HO models will be priced at $49.95.

Micro-Trains Tank Car Series – Kanotex Refining Company

Micro-Trains Kanotexex Tank Car

Micro-Trains Kanotex Tank Car

With its May 2013 announcements, Micro-Trains has announced a new series of oil tank cars which will feature 12 unique single-dome cars. The first release will be available in October 2013.

N Scale Frisco modelers may be interested in the first in the series, the Kanotex Refining Company, as it was based in Caney, Kansas.

According to a Wikipedia article, the company began operation in 1909 and the brand went defunct in 1953 when the company was acquired by the (also now-defunct) Anderson-Prichard Oil Corporation of Oklahoma City.

Micro-Trains does not list an item number for the Kanotex tank car but all cars in the series will be priced at $26.95. The reporting mark is KOTX and the road number is 503.

TrainBoard Special Run – Missouri-Illinois 50″ Boxcar

TrainBoard Missouri-Illinois Special Run Boxcar

TrainBoard Missouri-Illinois Special Run Boxcar

Another car of interest to Frisco fans is the first special run offered by TrainBoard.com.

Although the Missouri-Illinois Railroad was a holding of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, it would have been quite possible to see these cars on the Frisco, especially around St. Louis.

Wikipedia states of the Missouri-Illinois Railroad; “The Missouri–Illinois Railroad was a railroad that operated in Missouri and Illinois. The railroad operated around 200 miles (320 km) of track on both sides of the Mississippi River, connected by a train ferry. It began operations in 1921, and was owned by the Missouri Pacific Railroad and operated as a subsidiary railroad until it was merged into the Missouri Pacific in 1978.”

Missouri-Illinois System Map

Missouri-Illinois System Map

TrainBoard promotional language states; “The Missouri-Illinois was a major short line running along both sides of the Mississippi River south of St. Louis. It was wholly owned by the Missouri Pacific from July 1, 1929 after the consolidation of a number of Missouri and Illinois short lines, the Illinois Southern, the Southern Missouri, and the Mississippi River & Bonne Terre. The M-I served the rural parts of Missouri and Illinois. For a small railroad it was an impressive carrier of freight, mineral ore, coal, passengers, and even operated a ferryboat transfer service, all in just 200 miles of mainline. These boxcars were constructed by Pullman-Standard in 1962; Lot 8677, cushion underframe, 20” Hydra-Cushion loaders, and Evans DF-2. This special run is limited to 300 cars and is the first N Scale release offered by TrainBoard.com and SpecialRuns.com.”

The special run was manufacturered by Micro-Trains and bears the item number 03191032 and the road number is 96599. The cost is $29.95 with an additional charge of $5.95 for shipping.

These cars are only available at SpecialRuns.com and approximately 100 cars remain unordered at the time of this posting.

Bluford Shops Woodchip Hoppers

Bluford Shops Woodchip Hopper

Bluford Shops Woodchip Hopper

Bluford Shops – Hear our plea, read the post on November 13, 2012 when we asked Bluford Shops to produce woodchip hopper cars in our road name following our discovery of a photo in the 1960 Frisco Annual Report.

We are not to be disappointed with the announcement posted today on Bluford Shops web site.

Bluford Shops promotional language regarding woodchip hoppers states: Beginning in the late 50s, woodchips went from something to be disposed of to a valuable commodity. Since woodchips are less dense than coal, gravel and other hopper loads, many railroads added high extensions to standard hoppers for this service. The extensions were simple affairs, either rib-sided or flat-sided that were welded to the top chords of standard hoppers. Like our coal hoppers, these N scale models will come ready-to-run with knuckle couplers, and loads.

Regarding our road they state: Frisco was a 5,700 mile system radiating from their hub in Springfield, Missouri, linking Kansas City and Dallas in the west with St. Louis, Memphis and Birmingham in the east. Although Frisco was a long time strategic ally of Santa Fe, it was Burlington Northern they would merge with in 1980.

These hoppers will be available in six road numbers. According to the artwork posted, one of them will be 5913 (as seen in the 1960 annual report). Additional road numbers are not available at the time of this posting but a three car set can be ordered using item number 16083 with an MSRP of $74.37. A two car set will be listed as item number 16082 with an MSRP of $49.95, and a single car will bear item number 16081 with an MSRP of $24.95.

Pre-orders are open at now and Bluford Shops forecasts delivery in the third quarter of 2013.

Thank you Bluford Shops!

Atlas notes the following features:

Atlas 40′ Wood Reefer – St. Louis Refrigerator Car Company

Atlas 40' Reefer - St. Louis Refrigerator Car Company

Atlas 40′ Reefer – St. Louis Refrigerator Car Company

The Atlas Model Railroad Company has announced another release of interest to Frisco modelers; two 40′ reefer cars bearing the roadname St. Louis Refrigerator Car Company.

Wikipedia offers a small article which tells us that these cars usually contained beer. Their service around St. Louis will cause them to be of interest to many Frisco modelers.

Atlas promotional language states; This highly detailed model is based on the 40′ wood refrigerator cars built by Pullman for the Northern Refrigerator Car Co. in 1930. With its rooftop ice hatches, USRA-style fish belly underframe and vertical brake shaft, it is representative of the thousands of similar cars that were built during the “Billboard” era of American railroads.

The models feature:

  • Accurate painting and printing including door hinges, ladders, grab irons and end straps
  • Opening roof hatches
  • Realistic handle and latch detail
  • Wood grain finish detail on carbody
  • Ready-to-run
  • 40-ton friction bearing trucks with AccuMate® couplers

The item road numbers are 50 001 270/4123 and 50 001 271/4136. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for each car is $24.95 and the products are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2013.

Micro-Trains PS-2 100 Ton Covered Hopper

Micro-Trains PS-2 100 Ton Covered Hopper

As we reported on January 27, Micro-Trains has started off 2013 in excellent fashion with a Frisco release in their February announcements.

Micro-Trains promotional language states: This PS-2 100 ton covered hopper is painted gray with black Frisco herald and lettering. It was built in 1971, serviced in May 1976, and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. This group of 200 hoppers came from Pullman-Standard in March 1971, adding to the already 800-strong group purchased and leased in 1967. All received gravity outlets of either Wine or Miner types, except for a small group of 23 that were equipped with gravity-pneumatic outlets. The 1971s came with Morton and Ellcon equipment.

The road number is 79492 and the item number is 096 00 110. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $25.55 and the car is to be available immediately.

Not your average boxcar … incredibly popular among shippers numbering beyond the hundreds of thousands. These specially equipped insulated box cars were cushioned from slack action, protected with load equipment to prevent shifting loads, and insulated from extremes in temperature. Serving the food industry primarily, they were used by any shipper requiring a constant temperature and a nice cushioned ride.

These 70-ton Plate C cars were considered bunkerless refrigerator cars or insulated box cars and carried the mechanical designation of RBL or XLI, respectively. They were assigned to temperature sensitive commodities such as dried foods, canned goods, jar goods, drinks, packaged foods (rice, pasta, cereals), pet foods, nursery plants, seeds and Christmas trees. PC&F (now known as PACCAR) had it’s beginnings making railroad logging cars. But the company has a varied history: they were involved in making the armour for Sherman tanks during WW2, OEM of heavy duty trucks (Kenworth c. 1945, Peterbilt c. 1958), and of course, specialized in refrigerator car manufacturing & repair, finally exiting the railroad OEM business in 1984. It continues today as a one of the largest class 8 truck manufacturers worldwide.

Wheels of Time brings you the 50-ft Pacific Car & Foundry Insulated Loader-Equipped boxcar. The first time this car has been produced in N-Scale, this model has above average detailing, giving you the full flavor of these modern workhorses; Perfect for your model railroading adventures from the mid-60s to now.

Wheels of Time offers the following promotional language: Railroad specific options include single or double Youngstown plug doors and Hydra-Cushion or Keystone cushioning details. Our cars will ride at the proper height on realistic trucks with metal wheelsets; have body-mounted couplers like the real thing; have realistic underframe details; even have rivets at the side seams, and with the ultra-precise Wheels of Time tooling and authentic and attractive lettering and decoration you’ve come to expect from Wheels of Time. If you model the mid-60s to now, this is it.
